     ♦ Находясь все ещё в атмосфере моей трагедии, я считал этих людей с кухни моими товарищами по несчастью (Лимонов 1). Since I was still caught up in the atmosphere of my tragedy, I felt these people from the kitchen were my comrades in misfortune (1a).

     ♦ Говорили, что Попяшко был когда-то и откуда-то "сослан" в НИИ-9 высоким лицом и одно только имя этого высокого лица внушало Строковскому уважение; говорили, что и сам Строковский должен был идти на серьёзное повышение, да не пошёл, и это тоже было чем-то вроде "ссылки", так вот они с Поляшко - товарищи по несчастью, а это много значит... (Залыгин 1). It was said that Poliashko had once been "banished" to Research Institute No.9 by a highly placed person whose very name filled Strokovsky with awe. It was said that Strokovsky himself was long due for promotion, but it never came, and this was also a sort of "banishment." Thus he and Poliashko were companions in misfortune and this meant a lot (1a).
